Cattle abattoir at Cataby near Dandaragan

Industry and shire welcomes plans for cattle abattoir at Cataby north of Perth
Updated 11 Dec 2014

News of a potential new cattle abattoir north of Perth has been welcomed by the beef industry.
Malaysian based company Brahim's Holdings has signed a memorandum of understanding with Western Australian based Carpenter Beef to develop an abattoir in the Shire of Dandaragan.
Carpenter Beef supplies its product to Australian supermarkets and to Asian markets. Brahim's Holdings supplies food for in-flight catering and restaurants.
The two companies have agreed to work together to finalise an investment agreement.
Brahim's have told the Malaysian stock exchange that the processing plant, known as the Cataby Abattoir, would have a capacity of 100,000 carcasses a year with a 400 head per day capacity.
David Lovelock is a board member of the Cattle Council of Australia and is a New Norcia based cattle producer.
He said the Cataby abattoir is reflective of the current confidence in the beef industry.
He said an abattoir north of Perth would be of enormous benefit to producers.
"Any option north of Perth would be valuable, especially a significant one which this one seems to be," he said.
Tony Nottle is the chief executive officer at the Shire of Dandaragan.
He said the shire is yet to hear from Carpenter Beef regarding its latest plans, but is excited about investment and jobs in the region.
"The Cataby Abattoir project, the application for the development approval was issued back in 2007, so it's been quite a long standing project that we would have liked to have seen get going but the global financial crisis probably had a major part in determining if that would go ahead from there," he said.
"At this stage there is a planning approval in place ... but there's no building licence in place and they'd need to reapply for that because it has lapsed since the project got under-way."
"The strategic plan that the council has adopted recently is focussing more on economic drivers and growth areas of intensification of agriculture and horticulture and this fits squarely in that box as well, so I'd see that it fits in with the future vision of council and the community."

Brahim's Holdings Bhd has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Australia's Carpenter Beef Pty Ltd to build a slaughter house.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, Brahim's said the plant, Cataby Abattoir, is designed to meet all China, European Union, the United States Department of Agriculture and halal requirements.
"The plant will have a capacity of 100,000 cattle per annum on a single shift basis, with a 400-head per day capacity," the company said.
Upon additional capital expenditure of A$15 million (RM43.55 million), the plant will be fully operational within 6-9 months from investment date.

Under the MoU, Brahim's will make an investment of 49% in the abbatoir project.
In addition, both parties agree it is essential that the project receives the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia's (Jakim) endorsement, as well as certification, and that Brahim's seeks to enable financial consolidation of the joint-venture.
In this regard, Carpenter Beef will facilitate Brahim's to allow majority control of at least 51% to enable it to achieve the expected performance.
Brahim's will also be the major taker of the products produced by Cataby Abattoir. –
